A Word from Rev Gordon (03/01)

March 2025
Monthly Theme: Love as Transformation

Dear UU’s and friends of SepulvedaUU,

In a world often fraught with division and discord, the enduring power of love stands out as a force capable of transformation—not just at the individual level, but within entire communities and even among the powerful. As Unitarian Universalists, we embrace the understanding that love can change hearts and minds, particularly concerning issues of social justice and equality.

Love is more than a feeling; it is an active force that inspires action and connection. It is through love that we can engage those who harbor prejudices—such as homophobia—not with animosity but with empathy and understanding. Dr Martin Luther King Jr once said, “Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.” By approaching those who hold transphobic, homophobic, patriarchal, racist and all of the linked oppressive views with the spirit of compassion and dialogue, we can plant the seeds of understanding and change.

Consider the ripple effect that true love can have on individuals and communities. When we embody love in our various interactions, we challenge the narratives that perpetuate fear and hatred. In the face of discrimination, we can cultivate relationships with those who may see the world differently, leading to deep reflection and, ultimately, a change of heart.

Our Unitarian Universalist principles call us to “justice, equity, and compassion in human relations,” which urges us to “affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person.” These guiding principles inspire us to build coalitions centered around love—coalitions that lift up marginalized voices and work tirelessly against injustice, no matter the source. As UUA President Sophia Bentancourt reminds us, “Love is an act of revolution. It transforms the world around us and challenges us to reimagine our connections and commitments.” When we unite under the banner of love, we create a beloved community where every individual is recognized and valued.

As we strive for a society characterized by equity and acceptance, we must remember that love is not merely passive; it is revolutionary. Love invites us to take action, stand beside those who are oppressed, and challenge systems that perpetuate inequality. “Love is the doctrine of this church,” states the Unitarian Universalist Association, reminding us that love is at the core of our faith.

Building this beloved community requires conscious effort and unwavering dedication. It calls us to engage, educate, and empower—not only ourselves but also those who have been resistant to change. The great civil rights activist Audre Lorde once remarked, “As long as I am not free, you are not free either.” This poignant reminder speaks to the interconnectedness of our struggles and the imperative to love one another fiercely as a means of achieving true liberation.

Let us embrace the transformative power of love in our daily lives. Let it guide our interactions with friends, family, and even strangers. Let it shape the conversations we have with those who may challenge our beliefs. If we are to build the beloved community we envision, we must commit ourselves to being vessels of love and understanding.

During the month of March, I hope to bring messages of the power of transformation linked with love to our pulpit.  During March, we will hold a community dialogue on the power of love in social systems and how its ability to change hearts is essential to the work.  In March, we will continue on our journey toward being the Beloved Community we strive to be by offer a service and workshop renewing our commitment to being a welcoming congregation.  In March, women’s history month, we will honor women throughout the month!

In this spirit, I invite you to join me in an unwavering commitment to love as a catalyst for change. Together, we hold the power to shape our society and transform the hearts and minds of all.

In love and solidarity,
Rev Gordon Clay Bailey
