Day 10. Shubham Banerjee: Creating a Low-Cost Braille Printer.
At the age of 13, Shubham Banerjee transformed the way visually impaired people access written content by inventing a low-cost Braille printer using LEGO® bricks. His innovation, known as the “Braigo” printer, significantly reduces the cost of Braille printing, making it more accessible to millions around the world. As we continue our “30 Days of Celebrating Youth: Explorers & Innovators” series, we honor Shubham Banerjee for his ingenuity and his commitment to inclusivity.
A Simple Question with a Profound Impact
Shubham’s journey began with a simple question: “How do blind people read?” This question, which arose while working on a science project, led him to research Braille—a tactile writing system used by the visually impaired. He soon discovered that Braille printers, or embossers, were prohibitively expensive, often costing thousands of dollars. This high cost limited access to Braille, especially for individuals in developing countries or those with limited resources.
Motivated by a desire to make a difference, Shubham decided to create an affordable Braille printer using materials that were both accessible and inexpensive. With a LEGO® Mindstorms EV3 robotics kit, he set out to build a prototype that could print Braille at a fraction of the cost of existing machines.
The Birth of Braigo
After months of trial and error, Shubham successfully developed the first version of the Braigo printer. The device uses a simple mechanical process to emboss Braille dots onto paper, allowing users to produce Braille text quickly and efficiently. What made the Braigo printer truly revolutionary was its cost: while traditional Braille printers could cost upwards of $2,000, Shubham’s invention could be built for just a few hundred dollars.
Shubham’s low-cost solution attracted widespread attention, earning him recognition from tech companies, educators, and disability advocates. He even received funding and support from Intel, which helped him take his invention to the next level by developing a more advanced version of the Braigo printer.
Recognition and Ongoing Impact
Shubham’s work has been celebrated globally, and his invention has the potential to transform the lives of visually impaired individuals by making Braille more accessible. The Braigo printer has been featured in major media outlets, and Shubham has been invited to speak at conferences and events, sharing his story and inspiring others to think creatively about how they can make a difference.
Shubham’s dedication to improving the lives of others didn’t stop with the Braigo printer. He has continued to innovate and explore new ways to use technology to address social challenges, demonstrating that young people have the power to create meaningful change.
