A Son of Jamaican Immigrants, A Leader for the Nation

Colin Powell was born in Harlem in 1937 to Jamaican immigrant parents and raised in the South Bronx. From these humble beginnings, he rose to become a four-star general, National Security Advisor, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the first Black US Secretary of State.

His leadership broke barriers and reshaped US military and foreign policy during pivotal moments in American history.

Service Grounded in Integrity

Powell’s military career spanned 35 years, including two tours in Vietnam. He became known not only for his strategic expertise but for his focus on diplomacy, ethics, and collaboration. As Secretary of State under President George W. Bush, he was a steady and pragmatic voice during the tumultuous early 2000s, including the aftermath of 9/11.

Though he faced criticism for his role in presenting the case for the Iraq War at the United Nations—a decision he later described as a “blot” on his record—Powell’s ability to reflect publicly on that moment became part of his enduring legacy of accountability.

Mentorship and Representation

Powell championed education and leadership for youth, especially students of color. He founded America’s Promise Alliance, a nonprofit devoted to improving the lives of children and youth, and frequently spoke about the power of immigrant stories and resilience.

His life served as a symbol of what’s possible when opportunity meets excellence—especially for first-generation Americans from Caribbean communities.
