Day 14. Kalpana Chawla India-born American Astronaut.
Today, we honor Kalpana Chawla, a fearless trailblazer whose name continues to soar among the stars. Born in Karnal, India, Kalpana became the first woman of Indian descent to travel to space, breaking barriers for women, immigrants, and Asian Americans in the world of aerospace.

A Dream that Took Flight
Kalpana Chawla’s love for flying began as a young girl in India, when she would watch planes soar overhead and imagine herself among them. She immigrated to the United States to pursue her dream, earning her Master’s and PhD in Aerospace Engineering before joining NASA in 1995.
In 1997, she made history aboard Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-87), becoming the first India-born woman to travel into space. On this mission, she conducted important experiments in microgravity and proved that dreams truly know no borders.
Tragedy and Legacy
Kalpana returned to space in 2003 as part of the crew of Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-107) — a mission that would tragically end when the shuttle disintegrated upon re-entry, claiming the lives of all seven astronauts.
Though her life was cut short, Kalpana’s impact lives on:
- Schools, scholarships, and streets in both India and the U.S. have been named in her honor
- Her story continues to inspire young people around the world — especially girls in STEM — to chase their boldest ambitions
- She showed us that immigrants, women of color, and dreamers from every corner of the world have a place in the cosmos
