Day 14. Mohed Altrad Building a Global Empire.

“Success is not just about wealth; it’s about building something that matters and giving back to the world.”

— Mohed Altrad

Today we celebrate Mohed Altrad, a Syrian-born entrepreneur whose journey from orphan to billionaire is a powerful testament to resilience, determination, and visionary leadership.

From the Syrian Desert to Global Success

Mohed Altrad was born into extreme poverty in the Syrian desert. Orphaned at a young age and denied formal education, he was determined to change his fate. Through sheer persistence, he earned a scholarship to study in France, where he pursued a degree in computer science.

After working as a computer engineer, Altrad took a bold leap into entrepreneurship. He bought a struggling scaffolding company in the 1980s, transforming it into Altrad Group—now one of the world’s leading construction and industrial services companies, with a presence in over 100 countries.

Vision, Values, and Giving Back

Altrad’s business philosophy emphasizes ethics, community involvement, and human dignity. He believes that business success should uplift communities and create opportunities for those who are marginalized.

In 2015, Altrad was named World Entrepreneur of the Year by EY, recognized for building an empire valued at billions while maintaining a deep commitment to social responsibility. He also serves as President of the French Rugby Federation, reflecting his passion for community and team spirit.

Words of Wisdom

Altrad’s story is one of perseverance and purpose. He once said: “My dream was not to be a billionaire. My dream was to build something lasting, something that I could be proud of.”

His memoir, Badawi, is both autobiographical and inspirational, shedding light on his humble beginnings and relentless drive to overcome adversity.
