Today, we celebrate Leontyne Price (born February 10, 1927), a soprano whose groundbreaking career shattered racial barriers and set new standards for excellence in opera. With a voice described as “one of the great natural instruments of our time,” Price’s artistry and perseverance paved the way for countless Black performers in classical music and beyond.
Leontyne Price’s Journey
Born in Laurel, Mississippi, Leontyne Price discovered her love for music early on, singing in her church choir and honing her talents at the historically Black Wilberforce College. She continued her education at the Juilliard School, where her passion for opera flourished.
Price first gained national attention in the 1950s for her role in the NBC televised opera Tosca, marking a pivotal moment for Black artists in a predominantly white field. Her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1961 as Leonora in Il Trovatore solidified her place as one of the finest sopranos of her generation.
