Day 19. Ruth Simmons Shattering Ceilings in Higher Education.
We celebrate Ruth Simmons (born July 3, 1945), for being an extraordinary educator, trailblazer, and advocate for equity in higher education. As the first Black president of an Ivy League university, Simmons redefined leadership and championed inclusivity in academia, inspiring generations to dream big and pursue transformative change.
A Trailblazer in Education
Ruth Simmons was born in Grapeland, Texas, the youngest of 12 children in a family of sharecroppers. Her journey from a modest background to becoming the 18th president of Brown University in 2001 is a testament to her determination, brilliance, and resilience.
Simmons’ leadership at Brown was marked by historic achievements:
- Academic and Institutional Transformation: Simmons established need-blind admissions at Brown, ensuring that students could attend regardless of their financial circumstances.
- Confronting the Past: She spearheaded the Slavery and Justice Report, which examined Brown’s historical ties to slavery, setting a precedent for institutional accountability.
Before her tenure at Brown, Simmons served as the president of Smith College, where she initiated the first engineering program at a women’s college in the U.S.

Ruth Simmons’ leadership style is rooted in fostering community, diversity, and academic excellence.
- As a mentor, Simmons has uplifted countless students, emphasizing the value of education as a pathway to liberation.
- In her post-presidency roles, including as interim president at Prairie View A&M University, she continued to advocate for historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and equitable access to education.
