Day 22. Rashida Tlaib and Making History in Congress.

“I’m rooted in knowing who I am and where I come from, and that gives me the courage to fight for my community.”

— Rashida Tlaib

As part of honoring Arab American Heritage Month, today we honor Rashida Tlaib, a trailblazing politician who became the first Palestinian American woman elected to the US House of Representatives. As a proud daughter of Palestinian immigrants and a fierce advocate for social justice, Tlaib has made a lasting impact on American politics and the Arab American community.

From Detroit to DC: A Historic Victory

In 2018, Rashida Tlaib made history when she was elected to represent Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, becoming one of the first two Muslim women in Congress alongside Ilhan Omar. Her election was not only a win for representation but also a powerful statement about the diversity and resilience of American communities.

Raised in a working-class family in Detroit, Tlaib’s passion for advocacy and community service was shaped by her experiences growing up. Before entering Congress, she served in the Michigan House of Representatives, where she fought for environmental justice, workers’ rights, and affordable housing.

Speaking for Justice and Representation

As a member of the “Squad” — a group of progressive women of color in Congress — Tlaib has consistently pushed for policies that center marginalized communities. From Medicare for All to racial justice and immigration reform, she remains committed to fighting for policies that uplift working families and champion human rights.

One of her most defining moments was her unwavering stance on Palestinian rights — boldly advocating for peace and justice in the Middle East despite facing harsh criticism. Tlaib’s unapologetic authenticity and deep connection to her heritage inspire those who feel marginalized and silenced.

In Her Own Words

“You don’t have to change who you are to become a leader. Being authentic and real is powerful.”

— Rashida Tlaib

Impact and Legacy

Rashida Tlaib’s work challenges stereotypes about who can hold power in America. By centering the voices of low-income and marginalized communities, she has proven that representation matters — not just in presence but in advocacy and action.
