Day 26. Claudia L Gordon First Deaf Black Female Attorney.

Trailblazers in Law: Deaf Attorneys and Their Struggle for Justice

“Access to justice is not a privilege; it is a right. Deaf people deserve to be heard—in every sense of the word.”

— Claudia L Gordon

The legal profession has historically been challenging for marginalized communities, and Deaf individuals have often faced even greater barriers to education, accessibility, and professional advancement. Yet, pioneers like Claudia L Gordon and other Deaf attorneys have shattered barriers, advocating for disability rights, accessibility laws, and equal representation in the legal system.

Today, we celebrate Claudia L Gordon’s groundbreaking achievements as the first Deaf Black female attorney and recognize the vital contributions of Deaf lawyers and lawmakers in shaping a more inclusive legal landscape.

Claudia L Gordon: A Champion for Disability Rights

A Journey of Resilience

Claudia L Gordon’s story is one of perseverance, advocacy, and breaking barriers. Born in Jamaica, she became Deaf at the age of eight due to an illness. Facing discrimination in her home country—where Deaf individuals were often stigmatized and denied education—her mother sought a better future for her in the United States.

Determined to create change, Claudia pursued law, graduating from American University’s Washington College of Law, where she became the first Deaf Black woman to earn a Juris Doctorate degree.

Struggling for Disability Rights

Throughout her career, Claudia has:

✅ Worked at the U.S. Department of Labor, enforcing the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to ensure workplace rights for people with disabilities.
✅ Served in the Obama Administration as the Public Engagement Advisor for Disability Issues at the White House.
✅ Advocated for accessible government services, pushing for policies that improve the lives of Deaf and disabled individuals.
✅ Mentored young Deaf professionals, encouraging them to break into fields where Deaf representation has been historically low.

“Being Deaf and Black means living at the intersection of two marginalized identities, but it also means having the power to change systems that have long excluded us.”

Other Deaf Lawyers & Lawmakers Who Have Paved the Way

Claudia L Gordon is not alone in her struggle for justice. Many Deaf legal professionals have challenged discrimination, fought for accessibility, and shaped disability law in the US.

1️⃣ Harold Krents – Champion of Equal Employment Rights

Harold Krents was a Blind and Deaf attorney who worked tirelessly to eliminate employment discrimination against people with disabilities. His advocacy helped strengthen employment protections in the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

2️⃣ Richard Roehm – Struggling for Deaf Education Rights

Richard Roehm was a Deaf lawyer who advocated for Deaf education reform, ensuring that students had access to sign language interpreters and equal educational opportunities.

3️⃣ Howard Rosenblum – CEO of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD)

Howard Rosenblum is a Deaf attorney leading the NAD, working on major cases related to captioning rights, ASL accessibility, and Deaf discrimination in government and media.

Why Deaf Representation in Law Matters

Legal policies impact every aspect of our lives—education, employment, healthcare, voting rights, and accessibility. Without Deaf representation in the legal field, laws can be written and interpreted without considering the Deaf community’s unique needs.

Deaf attorneys and lawmakers play a critical role in:

✅ Challenging discrimination in employment, education, and public services
✅ Ensuring accessibility laws like the ADA are enforced and strengthened
✅ Pushing for sign language interpreters in legal and governmental settings
✅ Struggling for captioning, ASL rights, and inclusive communication policies

When Deaf lawyers take the stand, they bring personal experience and expertise to the struggle for justice.
