Day 28. Ameen Rihani Bridging East and West.

“The highest form of patriotism is that which recognizes humanity as a greater nation.”
— Ameen Rihani
Today we honor Ameen Rihani, a pioneering Lebanese American writer, philosopher, and political thinker who helped lay the foundation for Arab American literature and cultural diplomacy in the early 20th century. Through his words, he built bridges across continents, cultures, and religions.
A Voice of Dual Belonging
Born in Freike, Lebanon, in 1876, Ameen Rihani immigrated to the United States at age 11 with his father. He grew up between two worlds: the mountains of Lebanon and the streets of New York. This bicultural experience would deeply influence his work and worldview.
Rihani became fluent in both English and Arabic, and his literary contributions spanned both languages. He was one of the first Arab Americans to publish English-language fiction and poetry that authentically reflected Arab life, culture, and identity.
The Fusion of Thought and Spirit
Rihani’s most famous work, “The Book of Khalid” (1911), is widely considered the first English-language novel written by an Arab American. It blends Sufi mysticism, political commentary, and spiritual exploration in a powerful narrative about an immigrant torn between East and West. The novel was illustrated by Kahlil Gibran, a friend and contemporary, and together they helped shape a Mahjar (émigré) literary movement.
As a philosopher and essayist, Rihani advocated for peace, Arab unity, and mutual respect between the Islamic world and the West. He traveled extensively through the Middle East, engaging with leaders and promoting dialogue in a time of great political upheaval.
A Pioneer of Arab American Literature
While often overshadowed by his friend Kahlil Gibran, Rihani’s literary and diplomatic legacy is vital. He viewed literature as a tool for justice and cross-cultural understanding, and believed that unity was possible through shared human values.
“I do not speak for a race or a creed — I speak for humanity.”
He was an early advocate for Pan-Arabism, but also a believer in pluralism, coexistence, and the power of the written word to bring people together.
Quotes to Remember
“Poetry is the voice of the soul — it speaks when speech fails.”
“East and West — are they not two hemispheres of the same truth?”
