Day 3. Nyle DiMarco Is Redefining Representation in Media.

“I have a responsibility to be a role model—to show that Deaf people can do anything.” – Nyle DiMarco
When Nyle DiMarco won America’s Next Top Model in 2015, he shattered stereotypes about Deaf representation in mainstream media. A year later, he made history again by becoming the first Deaf winner of Dancing with the Stars. But beyond his victories on reality television, Nyle has become a powerful advocate for Deaf culture, language access, and authentic representation in entertainment.
Today, we celebrate Nyle DiMarco’s work in amplifying Deaf voices, breaking barriers in Hollywood, and pushing for greater inclusion.
Breaking Barriers on the Big Stage
Growing up in a multigenerational Deaf family, Nyle DiMarco was immersed in Deaf culture and American Sign Language (ASL) from birth. Unlike many Deaf individuals, who often struggle with access to language early in life, Nyle had a strong linguistic foundation—a privilege he now struggles to make accessible for all Deaf children.
His rise to fame began when he became the first Deaf contestant on America’s Next Top Model (ANTM) in 2015. Competing against hearing models with no accommodations, he proved that his hearing impairment was not a limitation, but an asset. His charisma, confidence, and talent led him to victory, making him an instant role model in the Deaf community.
Just a year later, he joined Dancing with the Stars, where he and his partner Peta Murgatroyd captivated audiences with stunning performances—without being able to hear the music. Their powerful silent performance to “The Sound of Silence” became one of the most memorable moments in the show’s history.
But rather than stopping at personal success, Nyle used his growing platform to advocate for systemic change.
Advocacy for Deaf Education and Language Access
In 2016, Nyle founded the Nyle DiMarco Foundation, which promotes language access and early childhood education for Deaf children. His mission is simple yet urgent: “90% of Deaf children are born to hearing parents, and most of them do not have full access to language at an early age. This must change.”
Through his foundation, he struggles for policies that ensure:
✅ Early access to ASL for Deaf children
✅ Bilingual education (ASL and English)
✅ Inclusion of Deaf culture in mainstream society
✅ Ending language deprivation, a crisis affecting many Deaf children due to lack of exposure to ASL
His activism extends to Hollywood, where he calls for authentic Deaf representation in film and television. He challenges casting directors and producers to hire Deaf actors for Deaf roles, ensuring that stories about Deaf people are told by the Deaf community.
Hollywood and the Struggle for Authentic Representation
One of Nyle’s biggest accomplishments has been bringing Deaf stories to the mainstream. He worked as an executive producer on the hit Netflix film “Deaf U”, which provides an inside look at Gallaudet University, the world’s only Deaf university. He also produced “Audible”, a 2021 Oscar-nominated documentary following a Deaf high school football team.
Through his work, he is shifting Hollywood’s portrayal of Deaf characters from inspiration tropes to authentic, multidimensional people.
His message is clear: “Deafness is not a disability—it is a culture, a language, and a source of pride.”
