Divinity: Where Do We Find the Holy? (03/08)

What do we mean when we say “God”? Is divinity distant and judgmental or intimate and relational? Is the Holy confined to doctrine, or alive in breath, soil, protest, and possibility?
What do we mean when we say “God”? Is divinity distant and judgmental or intimate and relational? Is the Holy confined to doctrine, or alive in breath, soil, protest, and possibility?
Liberating our theology of divinity means asking: Who told us what the Divine looks like? Why has the Holy so often been imaged as male, controlling, imperial? Womanist theologian Delores Williams challenged atonement theologies that glorify suffering. Ada María Isasi-Díaz reminded us that the Divine is found in lo cotidiano. The everyday struggles and joys of marginalized communities.
If divinity is love, as Julian of Norwich proclaimed “All shall be well” then how does that reshape how we treat one another? If the sacred lives in every body, how does that challenge sexism, racism, transphobia?
Perhaps liberating divinity means discovering that the Holy is not a monarch in the sky, but a movement among us, calling us toward beloved community. What if the Divine is less about control and more about connection?

About The UU Women’s Federation
The UUWF builds covenantal relationships amongst UU women that equip us all to be better co-conspirators and allies in the movement for collective liberation. It has always been the UUWF’s wish to join wholeheartedly with people everywhere in striving for universal human dignity, freedom, and peace. They are proud to have historically been the voice for women+ as an affiliate of the Unitarian Universalist Association. At a time when women’s rights and bodily autonomy are under increasing attack, UUWF remains committed to building community, resourcing leaders, and responding to urgent needs. Your gift today helps ensure this work continues—now and for the long haul.
Children’s Play and Learning Trays:
Children are welcome to join the adults in the Sunday Experience. We provided Children’s Play and Learning Trays, which are filled with fun activities to help children engage and participate in during the Sunday service.
