GA Highlights: Living Our Values Out Loud

1 August 2025

Dear Beloved Community,

This past month, I had the honor of representing Sepulveda Unitarian Universalist Society at the 2025 UUA General Assembly (GA), held both virtually and in person. I attended online, and this year’s theme, “Meet the Moment,” was a powerful reminder of our shared calling to respond with courage, compassion, and collective resolve to the challenges of our time. I came away deeply inspired, reminded that as Unitarian Universalists, we are uniquely positioned to live our values and act in a world that urgently needs them.

One highlight for me was the Ware Lecture by Imara Jones, an award‑winning journalist, who issued a powerful call to action, speaking on anti‑trans policies and the rise of authoritarianism in our government.

We also voted on new UUA Moderators and Board of Trustees members, and selected the next Congregational Study/Action Issue (CSAI): Abolition, Transformation, and Faith Formation – a three‑year process of learning and action.

Another inspiring moment was the passage of several Actions of Immediate Witness (AIWs)—resolutions responding to urgent social issues with commitments to action. This year’s AIWs were:

  • We Declare and Affirm: Immigrants Are People Who Have Inherent Worth and Inalienable Rights
  • Defending LGBTIQ Freedom Amid Funding Crisis: A Call for Global Solidarity
  • Faithful Defiance of Authoritarianism: A Collective Action Reaffirming Our Covenants for Democracy and Freedom

As we move through the rest of this year, I invite us to reflect: What does it mean for our congregation to “meet the moment”? How can we offer our gifts—of love, justice, presence, and imagination—to the struggles and hopes that surround us?

Let’s keep the GA conversations alive, deepen our relationships within this beloved community, and boldly live our values out loud.
