The Sunday Experience

  • 4:30 pm – Welcome and Hospitality
  • 5:00 pm – Evening Service (ZOOM Opens)
  • 6:00 pm – Refreshments
  • 6:30 pm – Continuing Conversations

Our Guest Speaker, James Coomes, will be exploring the concept of soft power with us, first coined by Joseph Nye in 1990 and used to differentiate the power of negotiations and relationship building from the application of military force in international negotiations. Although he will not be able to decipher current world conflicts in the context of soft power, he will explore with us how we can and do apply soft power and the values of Unitarian Universalism in our daily lives and in navigating our current local and national climate.

Learn more about James Coomes:

A lifelong Unitarian Universalist, James recently completed a term as president with the Neighborhood Church Board of Trustees. He is a licensed clinical social worker with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health and serves as the Service Area Chief in the Antelope Valley. He is actively involved in community empowerment and collaboration and has been involved in crisis prevention, intervention and postvention for over 20 years. His involvement in Unitarian Universalism influences his work in the public mental health system on a daily basis. In addition to his work in the Antelope Valley, James is a member of the DMH’s Anti-Racism, Inclusion, Solidarity and Empowerment Staff Advisory Council and has been actively involved in helping to shape the response and culture within his department following the murders of Ahmaud Abery, Brionna Taylor and George Floyd in 2020. Outside of the office, James builds Rose Parade floats and is the Chair of the Police Commission for the City of Burbank, and is the Voice of the Solid Gold Sound of the UCLA Bruin Marching Band.
