Intro to ASL (05/05)

Our Intro to Deaf Culture and Basic ASL class will share information about the life and norms of deaf people.
According to the World Federation of the Deaf, this includes “beliefs, attitudes, history, norms, values, literary traditions and art shared by those who are Deaf.”
Also, probably the main aspect of deaf culture is the use of Sign Language as the main form of communication.
During the class, you will be exposed to and will hopefully learn some of the most important basic ASL (American Sign Language) used on a daily basis.
American Sign Language (ASL) is a natural language with its own grammar and syntax, used by Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in North America. It’s a visual language expressed through hand movements, facial expressions, and body language. ASL is not simply a signed version of English; it has its own unique structure and vocabulary.
Kai Bailey, a 20 year old student of ASL and a CODA (child of a deaf adult) will offer this class with help from her grandfather Rev Gordon.
The class is being offered the next 5 Mondays, from 6-7:30 PM on the SepulvedaUU ZOOM Room 1.
For more info please contact Rev Gordon.
