Vice President’s Message (05/01)

May 2025

Are We Ready?

By the time you read this, we may have finalized our budget—or we may be right on the edge of doing so. Either way, the moment is both hopeful and sobering. We feel good about where we’re going. We have an amazing minister, a talented musician, a devoted choir. We are deeply committed to justice, and are a giving congregation.

I’m excited about the future. I’m hopeful. But I also believe we must be ready to grow—maybe even exponentially. The world is turbulent, and in times like these, people need our religion. They need our beliefs, our values, and our courage.

That may mean we’ll face bold and even frightening decisions. Are we ready for that? Are we willing to sacrifice in order to uphold what we know to be true?

That willingness is in our DNA. It is our legacy—our Unitarian and Universalist history. During the McCarthy era, we stood firm. Some split off. But many of us said no—we would not do what McCarthy wanted. We stayed. We resisted. And we held the line.

It seems to me the cycles of history have returned. And once again, here we are.

So even though the world may seem dark and uncertain, we will be the protectors of what is right. We will hold the light.
